RIOTOUS GARDENS OF ENCHANTING FLOWERS

two masterpieces of the weaver’s art – woven jamawar shawls with stripes and borders.

above: a schiaparelli pink shawl is woven with a border of pavement stripes in violet, scarlet and blue. the body of the shawl has sun flowers in a variety of blues, violets, scarlet and oranges.

below: its sister shawl has border stripes in dark red, ochre shades and sunny yellow. the flowers all over the shawl have a mango-paisley motif and are prettily detailed in white, soft ochre and pinks, together with a green leaf.

the creation of such complex patterns purely through weaving is an old and almost vanished art, making these shawls extremely special pieces.

woven jamawar

these are either woven with pattered borders or are woven with all-over patterns. both kinds of shawl have distinctive and ravishing stripy ends.
